How Much Resin Does One Print Actually Use?
Resin volume is easy to reason about because 1 cm³ of model equals 1ml of resin. The total a print consumes is the model volume plus supports, plus a small waste buffer for rafts, over-cure, cling and tank residue. Supports typically add 10 to 30% extra resin, and a 5% waste buffer is a sensible default. Worked example: a miniature with 8ml of model volume, 20% supports and 5% waste needs 8 × 1.20 × 1.05 = 10.1ml, so a full 1 litre bottle covers about 99 of them (1,000 ÷ 10.1). Hollowing Makes Resin Go Much Further
The single biggest saving on larger models is hollowing. Hollow anything bigger than 30mm in any dimension, use a 1.5 to 3mm wall, and always add 2 to 3mm drain holes at the lowest point so uncured resin can escape. The saving is dramatic: a 2mm shell on a 30mm cube uses roughly 35% of the solid volume (9,424 of 27,000 mm³), so the same bottle prints nearly three times as many of that model.
What Does a Bottle's Worth of Prints Cost?
Standard resin costs approximately 2 to 4p per ml (£20 to £40 per litre), while premium tough, flexible or castable resins run 4 to 8p per ml. That puts a 10.1ml miniature at roughly 20 to 40p in standard resin, and a 100ml model at about £2 to £4. Budget for failures too: a 5 to 10% failure rate is realistic for resin printing, and a failed print wastes the model resin and the supports.
