What are E-steps and why do they matter?

E-steps (steps per millimetre for the extruder) tell the firmware how many stepper motor steps are needed to push 1mm of filament. If this value is wrong, your printer will over-extrude or under-extrude, causing poor print quality, weak layer adhesion, or dimensional inaccuracy.

How do I measure the extrusion for calibration?

Heat the nozzle to printing temperature. Mark the filament 120mm above the extruder entry point. Using a terminal or LCD, command the printer to extrude 100mm slowly (e.g. G1 E100 F100). Measure from the mark to the extruder entry. Subtract from 120mm to get the actual extruded length.

Should I calibrate with or without the nozzle attached?

Calibrate with the nozzle removed or with it heated to normal printing temperature. Cold extrusion will give inaccurate results because back-pressure from the nozzle affects measurements. Some people prefer nozzle-off calibration for pure motor accuracy.

How do I save the new E-steps permanently?

Send the M92 command followed by M500 to save to EEPROM: M92 E[value] then M500. On Klipper firmware, update the rotation_distance value in printer.cfg instead. Always verify the new value by repeating the test.
