Bridging Distance Calculator — Maximum Bridge Length
Calculate the maximum bridging distance your printer can achieve based on material, layer height and cooling.
Filament type — PLA bridges best, TPU worst
Thinner layers improve bridging significantly
Smaller nozzles produce thinner strands that cool faster
Cooling fan setup — most important factor for bridges
Speed during bridge moves (20-30mm/s recommended)
How We Calculate This
Bridge Distance Estimation
Max bridge = Base distance × Cooling × Layer height × Nozzle × Speed × Enclosure × Temperature modifiers
Key Factors
Part cooling is the dominant factor — excellent cooling can increase bridge distance by 30% or more. Thinner layers bridge further because the extruded strand has less mass to sag. Slower speeds give the filament more time to cool and solidify mid-air.
