Hot End Calculator — Heater Wattage & Performance
Calculate heater wattage and thermistor requirements for your hot end.
Typical: 8-15g aluminium
Typical FDM: 5-15 mm³/s
How We Calculate This
Hot End Power Calculations
- Heat loss = ~0.05W per degree above ambient
- Filament melting power = Flow rate x Energy per cm³
- Min wattage = Heat loss + Filament melting power
- Heat-up time = (Mass x Heat capacity x Temp diff) / Available power
The heater must overcome heat losses and provide enough energy to melt filament at the desired flow rate. A recommended 50% overhead ensures stable temperatures during varying print conditions.
