Why does PTFE degrade at high temperatures?

PTFE (Teflon) begins to soften above 230C and starts to decompose above 260C, releasing toxic fumes. At lower temperatures it gradually hardens and loses its low-friction properties over time, leading to increased extrusion resistance and clogs.

How do I know if my PTFE tube needs replacing?

Signs include: increased clogs, especially during retraction; discolouration of the tube end near the hot end (white turning yellow/brown); inconsistent extrusion; and grinding sounds from the extruder. Inspect the hot end end of the tube periodically.
