Nozzle Flow Rate Calculator — Volumetric Flow Rate & Max Speed
Calculate volumetric flow rate, maximum recommended print speed, extrusion width and filament feed speed from nozzle diameter, layer height, print speed and material.
Nozzle orifice diameter — common sizes: 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8mm
Target layer height — typically 25–75% of nozzle diameter
Wall or perimeter print speed (not travel speed)
Material type affects maximum recommended flow rate
How We Calculate This
This calculator computes the volumetric flow rate from print geometry, compares it to material limits, and provides speed recommendations.
Extrusion Width
Extrusion width = Nozzle diameter × Width multiplier
Cross-Section Area
Area ≈ Layer height × Extrusion width − Layer height² × (1 − π/4)
This models the bead as a rectangle with semicircular ends.
Volumetric Flow Rate
Flow (mm³/s) = Cross-section area × Print speed (mm/s)
Max Speed
Max speed = Max flow rate / Cross-section area
