How much material do supports use?

Support material usage varies widely depending on model geometry, support density and type. A typical print with moderate overhangs might use 10-30% additional material for supports. Tree and organic supports use roughly half the material of linear supports for most geometries.

Which support type uses less material?

Tree and organic supports typically use 40-50% less material than linear/grid supports because they branch upward to contact points rather than filling entire columns. They also tend to leave better surface finishes and are easier to remove.

What overhang angle needs supports?

Most FDM printers can handle overhangs up to 45-50° from vertical without supports. Beyond that, supports are needed to prevent sagging and drooping. Bridge spans up to 10-15mm may not need supports depending on cooling and material.

How can I reduce support material?

Rotate your model to minimise overhangs, use tree or organic supports, reduce support density (10-15% is usually sufficient), and increase the support-model gap to make removal easier. You can also split models into parts that print without supports.

The formula

Support area = Footprint area x Overhang fraction

Support volume = Support area x Height x Density x Type multiplier

Weight = Volume x Material density (1.24 g/cm³ for PLA)
